The Explanation Can Survive After the Reality Changes
Executive Field Note 041
Organizations need explanations.
They make events understandable.
They connect cause and effect.
They allow experience to become knowledge.
But explanations have a peculiar durability.
Once accepted, they can remain long after the conditions that made them useful have changed.
New information is then interpreted through an old explanation.
Eventually the explanation stops describing reality.
It begins organizing it.
Executive Question:
Which explanation in your organization remains convincing primarily because it has been convincing for so long?
