Judgment Begins Where the Model Stops
Executive Field Note 052
Models are useful because reality is too large to hold all at once.
They reduce.
Organize.
Compare.
Project.
They make complexity available for thought.
But every model has an edge.
Beyond it are conditions not represented.
Relationships not included.
Events the model has never encountered.
A model can tell us what follows from what it contains.
Judgment becomes necessary when what matters may be what it does not.
Executive Question:
Where does your model end—and your responsibility begin?
