The Organization Changes When Its Relationships Change
Executive Field Note 022
Organizations are drawn as structures.
Boxes.
Lines.
Functions.
Reporting relationships.
But the lived organization exists between people.
Who trusts whom.
Who listens.
Who withholds.
Who can disagree.
Who gets access.
Change the chart without changing those relationships and surprisingly little may change.
Change the relationships and the organization may transform before the chart moves at all.
Executive Question
Which relationship, if it changed, would alter the organization more than another restructuring?
