How to Read What Is Actually Happening in a Market

Before You Decide What to Do, Learn to See What Is Happening
Most trading education begins with action.
Where should I enter? Where should I exit? Which indicator should I use? Is this a buy or a sell?
The Trader’s Field Manual begins somewhere else.
Before deciding what to do, a trader needs to develop the ability to recognize what the market is actually doing.
That means learning to observe structure, location, participation, momentum, range expansion, and the interaction between buyers and sellers without immediately forcing those observations into a predetermined trading methodology.
The objective is not another setup. It is market fluency.
A Field Guide to Market Behavior
Built from decades of market research, system development, and live-market teaching, The Trader’s Field Manual presents a practical framework for investigating markets as they unfold.
Rather than asking only whether price is going up or down, the reader learns to ask better questions:
- Where is the market relative to meaningful structure?
- What is the market attempting to do?
- Who appears to be participating?
- Where is participation succeeding or failing?
- Is momentum expanding, contracting, or changing character?
- What range expansion has already occurred?
- What expansion remains reasonably possible?
- What evidence would cause the current interpretation to change?
These questions shift trading away from prediction alone and toward observation, recognition, and evidence.
Market Expansion Theory
A central framework within the book is Market Expansion Theory (MET) — an approach to understanding markets through the relationship between structure, participation, momentum, location, and the expansion of range.
Instead of beginning with “Where will price go?”, MET asks a more useful question:
What is the most likely direction for range expansion from here?
The distinction matters. Markets do not move simply because a pattern appeared or an indicator changed color. Price moves through the interaction of participants operating within an evolving market structure.
Learning to recognize that interaction is at the heart of the Field Manual.
From Observation to Fluency
The book develops a way of thinking that precedes any particular trading technique:
Description → Explanation → Inquiry → Observation → Recognition → Learning → Knowledge → Freedom
The trader learns to separate what has actually been observed from the explanation placed upon it — and to remain open long enough for the market itself to provide additional evidence.
Before asking whether a conclusion is right, it is worth becoming interested in the process by which that conclusion became convincing.
What the Field Manual Explores

- Price Action Structure (PAS)
- Market and volume profile
- Value, edges, and range extremes
- VWAP, static VWAP, and structural reference levels
- Participant presence and interaction
- Momentum and changing market conditions
- Range expansion and expected range
- Market Mapping
- Probability and probability inversion
- Reversal structure and failure
- Order flow as confirmation rather than ideology
- Risk, execution, and trade management
- The difference between seeing a market and merely applying a methodology to it
Not Another Trading System
The Trader’s Field Manual is not a collection of mechanical entries and exits, nor is it an argument that traders need one more indicator, setup, or trading system.
Tools can be valuable. Systems can be valuable. Artificial intelligence and programming can dramatically accelerate research and development.
But none of them eliminates the need for domain expertise.
A trader still has to know what to measure, why it matters, what the evidence means, and when the underlying market condition has changed.
The Field Manual is intended to help develop that foundation.
